Australia now has their own Top Gear. It's very similar to the British version but made for Australia. Also I hear that the next season of Top Gear is going to be filmed in HD. That means BBC HD can air it. 1080i is the format and maybe BBC America will launch their HD channel for it. Skins, Torchwood, and Robin Hood, and Top Gear Series 12 are about the only shows that are in HD. I'm sure they will launch it soon and Time Warner will probably add it when they have enough bandwidth.

BBC HD in the UK uses FTA and BSkyB rather than DVB-T since DVB-T doesn't have the bandwidth. ATSC via 8VSB has the bandwidth but uses MPEG-2 which isn't as efficient as MPEG-4. DVB-T2 should solve that problem by enhancing COFDM to give it more bandwidth. ATSC doesn't support MPEG-4 like DVB. There is a new Spec to give it MPEG-4 capabilities but it would require yet another DTV transition and people would have to get new converter boxes and even new TV's. DVB-T2 in the UK is scheduled for 2012. No word on when ATSC will adopt MPEG-4 but it's in the works for countries that are still deciding on DTV.

DVB-T is just for digital tv in PAL-format i think.. for HD they use DVB-C here.

Also DVB can work with non PAL areas. Europe could have used ATSC but chose to use DVB. Apparently COFDM is better but doesn't have ATSC's bandwidth. Cable uses ATSC/DVB but with QAM as it's modulation standard. Satellite providers in the us use a variant of DVB-S. Also DVB-T2 and DVB-C2 will happen soon. Some countries will use DVB-T2 for even extra bandwidth. The others might have DVB-T with MPEG-4. ATSC and DVB both share the same HD formats while it can support PAL. DVB I believe can support 480i like NTSC. So it's not just for PAL countries. Europe is slowly going HD while the US has tons of it.

Yeah and it sucks.. I just bought a 1080p plasma TV and all the fun I can have in high quality is downloaded HD movies.. regular tv looks really bad. On the other hand we have 3G-network all over Europe while the US is slowly following Smile - I would rather have HDTV though xD

There are plans for 4G in the US within the next 2 years. Verizon is going to use LTE like AT&T for 4G. Wimax is what sprint wants to use. LTE is an enhanced version of HSPA thats even faster. Verizon doesn't use GSM in the USA. They use CDMA which is owned by Qualcomm. Not having to pay qualcomm for royalities is nice. CDMA however doesn't work in Europe. Verizon will still use CDMA for calls and LTE for data. They are using EV-DO but it's not as fast as HSPA.

GSM sucks and so does CDMA... and HSPA (3G) is only available in large cities in the US as far as I know. The coverage is a little better here, however. In Japan they already run in some places 4G and you put it perfectly yourself.. "There are plans for 4G in the US" - great indeed, here they are testing the technology right now Wink
Wimax was not originally intended for cell phones but I guess the technology could be used for that aswell. Wimax is available most places here but no one uses it and 3G networks are faster atm.

Wimax isn't perfect and has some flaws. Unless Sprint fixed the bugs then it might be ok. EV-DO isn't just in big cities. Some smaller towns have EV-DO as well. Even rural areas have EV-DO in some locations.

Now Top Gear Season 12 will start on November 2nd on BBC Two and maybe if all goes as planned BBC HD Smile.

The ninth series of Top Gear began on 28 January 2007 and concluded on 4 March 2007. The series featured six episodes, with a further two specials ("Top Gear of the Pops" and "Polar Challenge Special"), broadcast after wards. Season 9 is now available on iTunes, however the first episode is not included in the "Season" and episodes 2 through 6 are renumbered as episodes 1 to 5.
